SEND
Sandal Castle VA Community Primary School is recognised by external practitioners, professionals and organisations for our exemplary and inspirational work in relation to supporting children with SEND.
At Sandal Castle Primary we view inclusion as:
- A sense of belonging
- Feeling respected
- Feeling valued for who you are
- A level of support and commitment.
- Education that is accessible to all.
These core values underpin the inclusive curriculum we offer in our school.
Meet the SEND Team...
At Sandal Castle, we have two SENCo's who work closely together to ensure a seamless transition for children and their families as they move between each key stage. Our SENCo's are committed to providing the best provision and outcomes for our SEND pupils.

We have a valuable team of inclusion staff, who work closely with our SENCo's and are all trained in specific areas of SEND. Our team of skilled staff are able to plan and deliver provision to meet the needs of the SEND children within our care.
The Nook
At Sandal we are very excited to announce our brand new sensory room 'The Nook'. This provision is for our highest need SEND children and those who require sensory support throughout the school day.
Inclusive Library Areas
Within school, we have a range of inclusive reading resources available for our children. Our Inclusion Library is filled with books about different disabilities or specific learning difficulties, in order to raise awareness and the profile of SEND in school. We also have a Dyslexia Friendly Library with a range of Barrington Stoke books for all different ages. You can access a range of their books online here - https://collins.co.uk/pages/barrington-stoke. We are always looking for new additions to add to our library area and any donations are appreciated.
Kind words from our SEND Parents and carers...
"The SENCo team at Sandal Castle have gone above and beyond for my child, ensuring every single one of his needs are met and catered for. Not only do they provide a support network for my child, but also for me as a parent. They listen to our needs and what’s best for my child and take this into consideration. A highly supportive and successful SENCo team."
"Miss Smethurst has been fantastic, she always replies in a timely manner and puts things into place to support my daughter. I always feel heard and my concerns are always taken seriously."
"I have felt listened to and supported as a parent with any issues I have needed to discuss, about my sons' learning and emotional needs. I feel that the SEND team are approachable and are very responsive via email. Thank you for making the transition into the new school year a pleasant one, for both my son and myself."
How we celebrate differences at Sandal Castle...
At Sandal Castle we understand how important it is to share our similarities and celebrate our differences. We have recently raised awareness for World Down Syndrome Day on 21st March, by wearing odd socks. Children throughout school were encouraged to complete activities based around the number 21, to recognise Down Syndrome and the extra copy of chromosome 21!
