Collective Worship

As a Church of England school, Collective Worship is an inspiring and integral part of our school day. It is a special time to bring the school community together to give thanks and praise to God. It provides an opportunity for the children to consider spiritual and moral issues, ask and answer big questions and explore their own beliefs.   

                                                  

Our school motto places emphasis on the importance of ‘togetherness’ as unity is strength. We truly believe that we should all love, respect and support each other. We are a school community and we are a family. We learn together, we care for each other, and we know that by working with God, to be the best that we can be, every member of our learning community can flourish. We are proud to be a Church of England School, and our Vision is firmly rooted in the example and teaching of Jesus.

                                        

Our Collective Worship is invitational, inclusive and inspirational creating a space in our busy school day to practise stillness and reflection. It helps us to think deeply about the world we live in, our place within it and our gratitude for it.

Worship is also an opportunity to reflect on our values in the context of our Christian ethos. Through our values of: -

• Respect - we encourage children to care about how they and others feel; to treat others kindly and use good manners.
• Inclusion - we encourage children to celebrate diversity and treat everyone as equal and important.
• Understanding - we encourage children to build understanding both intellectually and emotionally.
• Resilience, we encourage children to be flexible, to persevere and to bounce back.
• Creativity - we nurture children’s creativity, imagination, innovation and exploration. We encourage children to express themselves and develop emotionally, academically and spiritually.

In Collective Worship each week, we consider how these values relate to the teachings of Jesus. We think about how they help us to be good people and how to flourish in our lives.

 

Children are encouraged to reflect on other important values such as compassion, thankfulness, justice, respect, forgiveness and reconciliation. They are also supported in developing virtues including resilience, honesty, generosity and integrity. These opportunities help to shape character, deepen understanding of themselves and others, and create positive attitudes towards learning that support both personal development and academic achievement.

Our weekly Collective Worship themes are carefully chosen to explore the teachings and example of Jesus, significant events within the Christian calendar, and relevant local, national and global issues. They are thoughtfully linked to our Christian vision and values, enabling children to understand how faith can inspire and guide everyday actions and choices. Worship themes also draw on the lives of inspirational individuals and events, both past and present, that demonstrate courage, compassion, service and hope in action. Through exploring issues of social justice, equality, stewardship and global responsibility, children are encouraged to reflect on their role as active citizens who can make a positive difference in the world. These meaningful connections provide rich opportunities for spiritual reflection, personal growth and courageous advocacy, helping children to develop a deeper understanding of themselves, others and their place within a diverse and interconnected global community.

Our Worship enables children to explore how Christians around the world celebrate and express their faith in a variety of ways. As they learn about and share experiences of different religions and traditions, children discover the common values that connect Christianity with other world faiths, fostering respect, understanding and inclusion.

Our children play an important role in the planning, leading and evaluation of collective worship. Our Collective Worship Leads together with our Collective Worship Ambassadors steer the way with this, modelling how all children can play their part in contributing to this important aspect of our school day and Christian identity. They represent all the children at Sandal Castle Primary and help to organise Collective Worship and participate in prayer and bible story times. 

We greatly value our close and supportive partnership with St Helen’s Church and Reverend Hannah Smith, which plays an important role in the spiritual life of our school community. Through their regular involvement in Collective Worship, Reverend Hannah and the Children’s Team Leader support children in exploring Christian values, developing their understanding of faith, and engaging with spirituality in ways that are relevant and meaningful to them.

Our strong links with St Helen’s also provide opportunities for children to visit the church throughout the year to celebrate key events in the Christian calendar, including Harvest, Christmas and Easter. These shared experiences strengthen the connection between school and church, helping children to see faith as a lived and active part of the wider community.

The Church year is marked by different colours, known as liturgical colours, which help Christians remember key events and seasons in the life of Jesus and the Church. Purple is used during times of preparation, such as Advent and Lent. White and gold celebrate special occasions like Christmas and Easter, reminding us of joy, hope and new life. Green is used for much of the year during Ordinary Time and represents growth in faith. Red is used at Pentecost and other special days, symbolising the Holy Spirit, courage and love. These colours help bring meaning to our worship and encourage reflection throughout the year.

Collective Worship encourages participation and response, whether through active involvement in worship or through listening and reflection. Our Collective Worship Policy draws on guidance from the Church of England, and we are committed to continually reflecting on our planning and practice to ensure that Collective Worship is an essential component of an education that enables all pupils to flourish and ‘live life in all its fullness’ John 10:10. 

 

Legal Framework

There must be a daily act of Collective Worship for all pupils that considers their age and aptitude (Education Reform Act 1988). Parents have the right to withdraw children from Collective Worship and suitable arrangements will be made to accommodate these children. However, as Collective Worship occupies such a central place in the life of the Church school and is regarded as a very important part of children’s education, there is an expectation that parents wishing to request a withdrawal will meet with the Head Teacher to discuss their concerns and requirements.
