Year 3 Residential Visit to Castleton

Our Year 3 children spend 2 days away in the high peak district Derbyshire village of Castleton. It has an array of natural and historical features both above and below the ground. Our children spend one night staying at the local Youth Hostel.

They experience:

Fossil Hunting - The children hunt for fossils whilst learning about the 330 million year old inhabitants of Castleton.

Three Rocks Walk - The walk explores the area around the village where the children discover the three different types of rock found beneath Castleton's unique landscape. The walk includes a visit to old mining relics.

Gem Panning - The children use panning dishes to search through sediment from Castleton's river in search of local gems and minerals. What good 'mucky' fun!

Lead Mine - The children get to experience the life of a lead miner by climbing ladders and squeezing past boulders in an imitation lead mine. Dressed in authentic costume, the children learn about the techniques used in the past and the perils faced by miners.
